North East Property Forum February 2010

A lack of mortgage availability and the large deposits required by lenders is having a severe impact on the market according to members of the North East Property forum, which is hosted by the Northern Echo in collaboration with Latimer Hinks Solicitors.
The forum, which was joined by Terry Davies, from independent financial advisers Jonathan Fry and Co, also looked at how the commercial and agricultural sectors were faring.

North East Shadow MPC Votes To Hold Rates Again - Jan 10

Following the holiday celebrations, North-East business leaders have delivered a sobering message that 2010 would not bring an explosive escape from recession. The North East Shadow Monetary Policy Committee, run in partnership with Arlington Financial of Hartlepool, The Northern Echo and the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), also called on the Bank of England to leave interest rates at 0.5 per cent when it meets tomorrow. Members of the committee, representing a wide cross section of business sectors, felt at best that there would be a steady climb to recovery, or that 2010 would be a bit better. But there were also concerns about increased unemployment and more corporate insolvencies in the next 12 months, with the looming General Election also creating a state of limbo. Jon Sturrock, managing director of Arlington Financial, said: “I voted for an interest rate rise today. I feel that we’ve had a sustained period of 0.5% interest rates now. The economy is starting to recover and this month we should get official confirmation that we are emerging from the recession and I think that an interest rate rise will help manage the inflationary pressure over the next few months.”

Private Investigator Andy Coates wins a top award

National Enforcement Services’ Chief Executive Officer, Andy Coates, has been recognised as one of the top private investigators in Britain after being praised for his service and dedication to the sector.
Andy has received the Frank Martin award from the Association of British Investigators (The Association) after starting in private investigation in 1988 and joined The Association in 1994, progressing through the industry from head of the northern branch to being a member of the governing council.

Gordon Brown Associates urges government to back property proposal

However, the letter to the Chancellor is not an order from above. Its author is a namesake of the Prime Minister and a leading North East lawyer with 31 years’ experience in the legal sector and housing market.

New Shadow MPC for The North East

Influential North East business leaders have called for an interest rates cut at the first meeting of a new regional ‘shadow’ monetary policy committee, established by the North East Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with The Northern Echo and Recognition Marketing & PR.
The majority vote by five of the nine members of the North East Shadow Monetary Policy Committee, which will discuss the interest rate each month – two days ahead of the real MPC, was for a 0.5% cut in rates.
Members include the top people from manufacturing, retail, agriculture and business support organisations and the discussion looked at a wide range of issues to find the best step to help the region’s economy.
This included discussion on various aspects of the region’s economy, from the needs of big business to pensioners’ convenience store spending.

Yorkshire law firm helps in car dealership takeover

Yorkshire law firm Baxter Caulfield has helped a Yorkshire businessman to secure his purchase of the former Harratts Volvo dealership.
The Huddersfield based firm, which specialises in law for business owners, worked on behalf of Clive Brook to finalise his buyout of the Canal Road site, with minimal disruption to the dealership.
The Volvo dealership currently employs 25 staff across its sales and maintenance teams, all of whom are committed to making Clive Brook the new name in Volvo in West Yorkshire.

Lawyer Sends HIPs Appeal To MPs

MPs across the North East have been sent a video appeal from the head of one of the region’s leading law firms, Gordon Brown Associates, ahead of Tuesday’s debate on Home Information Packs (HIPs).
The House of Commons will discuss the issue of the controversial packs, which are due to come into being on June 1, in a debate tabled by the Conservative Party – an issue of great concern to Gordon Brown, senior partner at the firm.

AGE DISCRIMINATION LAW

Darlington law firm Latimer Hinks held a series of free breakfast seminars to help local employers through the minefield of the new age discrimination laws.
Legislation outlawing age discrimination came into effect on October 1, 2006. Every area of employment is affected, from recruitment, selection, promotion, pay and benefits through to redundancy, retirement and dismissals.
