North East Shadow MPC Votes To Hold Rates Again - Jan 10

Date: 05/01/2010
Following the holiday celebrations, North-East business leaders have delivered a sobering message that 2010 would not bring an explosive escape from recession. The North East Shadow Monetary Policy Committee, run in partnership with Arlington Financial of Hartlepool, The Northern Echo and the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), also called on the Bank of England to leave interest rates at 0.5 per cent when it meets tomorrow. Members of the committee, representing a wide cross section of business sectors, felt at best that there would be a steady climb to recovery, or that 2010 would be a bit better. But there were also concerns about increased unemployment and more corporate insolvencies in the next 12 months, with the looming General Election also creating a state of limbo. Jon Sturrock, managing director of Arlington Financial, said: “I voted for an interest rate rise today. I feel that we’ve had a sustained period of 0.5% interest rates now. The economy is starting to recover and this month we should get official confirmation that we are emerging from the recession and I think that an interest rate rise will help manage the inflationary pressure over the next few months.”

ICE North East report

Date: 14/10/2008
Experts are calling for a 30-year plan to overcome the “paralysis” blighting the North East’s transport network and to avoid major economy-damaging problems, in a report issued today by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Lack of investment and lengthy delays to planning decisions are all cited as causes for concern in the report by the ICE’s North East region, which calls for a 30 year strategy to ensure that capacity improvements are delivered in a timely fashion to provide wider benefits to the region. The report had been commissioned and compiled by a panel of experts who looked at planning and capacity across the network - taking into account rail, road, sea and air. However, the panel has highlighted that growth in air and sea travel is dependent on improvements to the region’s land-based networks.
